Very interesting. The other narrative that I heard was that Iran/Russia arranged the trap because of their hatred of US efforts to bring down Assad and Syria. each of these narratives would be somewhat exclusive of the other, though.

The cooperation between an AQ affiliate and Turkey is a bit disconcerting, as the US was supposedly supporting Muslim Brotherhood operations in Syria via Turkey where the MB operates as an AQ rival. One hypothesis that explains it is that Putin put his foot down about the operation in Benghazi as a "red line in the sand," Zero blinked, and the Turks were allowed to deliver the "We were caught, you're dead now, sorry," message to Stevens before AQ did the deed.
