Mafia Cops May Lose Their Disability Pensions

Federal prosecutors are moving to seize the tax-free disability pensions of so-called Mafia Cops Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa who were convicted for eight murders on behalf of Lucchese crime family underboss Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso as reported by John Marzulli for the Daily News: "Caracappa receives a monthly pension of $5,300 and Eppolito $3,900." The two dirtbags are serving life sentences for their serial murders, and further had been fined $4.2 million. Apparently any seized money will be used to satisfy the court judgment.

President Obama has been much more aggressive -- rightly so -- than prior administrations in using financial enforcement action in the fight against organized crime. For example, the Justice Department earlier this month imposed a record $1.92 billion fine against international banking giant HSBC to resolve allegations that it laundered drug money for Mexican cartels, and last year the President issued Executive Order 13581 which authorizes the Treasury Department to designate transnational crime groups in order to freeze their U.S. assets and ban American citizens and companies from conducting business with them.

In order to take a bite out of crime law enforcement must hit where it hurts: the pocketbook.
