I never really did get the idea of how we were supposed to allow the government (especially the federal government, which has no even arguable jurisdiction in the matter) to be allowed unsupervised access to impressionable minds and assume that we wouldn’t create generations of people who think government is inherently on the side of the angels and people who work for a living are presumed to be crooked.

That would be "FEWER", not less public schools. Fewer when you're talking about quantity; less when you're talking about amount.
