Mrs. Bears is an elementary school teacher and, up until the Newtown CT incident, has been ambivalent about guns of all sorts. While she never discouraged me from purchasing and owning guns, she didn’t encourage it either—And adamantly stated that she did not want to own a gun, ever.
The Newtown shooting shook her awake, so to speak. I’ve gone to her school several times since, and we’ve mapped out contingencies and survival strategies for her class (the school’s approach is that all teachers must keep their classroom doors locked at all times, henceforth). In so doing, she reached the conclusion (on her own) that she and her students are pretty much sitting ducks if a bad guy gets in. Next paycheck, at her suggestion, we’re heading to our local gunstore to see if it’s possible to purchase an LCP with pink grips.
