In an interview (above) aired on the April 18, 2008, edition of NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, Lori Haas—who has never been involved in a mass shooting and who has no personal insights into what happens in a mass shooting—argued that being armed could not have helped any of the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre because the shooter “had the element of surprise.”  For Mrs. Haas to make such an argument is not only ironic; it’s downright bizarre, since it was her daughter Emily who recounted to CNN, five days after the shooting, how she hid under a desk listening to gunshots, “waiting and hoping” the shooter wouldn’t come into her classroom.

Lori Haas’s claim that students in the midst of a school shooting would be too paralyzed by fear to use handguns in self-defense lacks credibility in light of the fact that her daughter wasn’t too paralyzed by fear to make a cell phone call to 911.  At one point Emily even reported to the 911 operator that the gunman had stopped to reload.  She was still on the phone with the operator several minutes later when the gunman entered her room for a second time.  Though Emily survived with only superficial gunshot wounds, her professor and eleven of her classmates lost their lives.

The NRA has a third that many new members in the last month and it cost every one of them money to join. It costs nothing to sign you name on a piece of paper or to do it electronically on-line. I'm sorry for the loss of the teachers and students but my rights are not given to me because of what others think. My rights are not going to be taken away from me because of people signing a piece of paper either.

“About 80 protesters, including three directly affected by recent mass shootings, helped deliver a petition to store officials they said contained that names of almost 300,000 people who want Wal-Mart to stop selling rifles similar to the semi-automatic Bushmaster used in the killing of 20 children and six adults at the Newtown school on Dec. 14. The names were gathered online.”

Um… I was just in this Walmart store this afternoon.

They don’t sell guns there, I don’t believe they ever have. I don’t believe they sell ammunition, either.

(Oops, just read that this info is contained in the article, which I didn’t see, but my observation above was from personal experience.)
