SOMERSET, N.J. -- Tucked away in a quiet rural neighborhood in Somerset, New Jersey is an old brownstone that houses the New Jersey Chapter of the Islamic Center of North Americas (ICNA) WhyIslam Project. Within its confines, in a second floor office decorated with rose-colored walls, sits the administrative assistant and only female employee of the department, Nahela Morales.
In a long black garment and gray headscarf, Morales sits in front of a computer entering notes and taking phone calls from the programs hotline, 1-877-WhyIslam, a resource for individuals hoping to learn more about the religion. A Mexican immigrant and recent convert, Morales is the national Spanish-language outreach coordinator for the program, part of ICNAs mission to disseminate information about Islam nationwide.
But Morales efforts go beyond U.S. borders: the 37-year-old recently led a trip to bring Islamic literature, food and clothing to her native Mexico.
Morales, who was born in Mexico City but later moved to California and then New York, is part of a growing population of immigrant Muslim converts from Latin America many of them women -- now helping to bring the religion back to their home countries.
Immigrant Latinas Find a Place in Islam
Many immigrants are here by themselves, says Morales, noting that Latina immigrant women are drawn to Islam because of the sense of belonging they find within the Muslim community. When they come into the mosque and see smiling faces, they feel welcome.
According to WhyIslams 2012 annual report, 19 percent of the some 3,000 converts it assisted in 2011 were Latinos, and more than half of those (55 percent) were women.

Damned fools.
The major reason for conversion given in the article is not spiritual, it is social - for “protection,” respect, belonging.
These are the reasons people join gangs.
Oh wait...nevermind.
“....it is social - for protection, respect, belonging.”
.
Yeah right, until you become a victim of an “honor” killing you idiots.
Well, that’s the selling point-—the idea that they are
“alone”, and need a sense of community. So naturally they hook up with “other” self-styled “outcasts”, like Muslims.
That way they find “common cause”. Meanwhile, the project of
coalition building goes on behind the scenes, not so subtly,
but always with the ulterior motive of becoming political players in a political system now more hospitable to their
usefullness than ever before.
That way, if anyone dares challenge or question Latinos, they would be doing the same to Muslims, and vice-versa.
It’s yet another refinement of identity politics.
There’s a reason , as far back as the late 1940s, Malcolm Little
discovered Islam in a US prison, and eventually became Malcolm X.
What will happen if they start suggesting Sharia Law ? They want all women to wear veils ?
Thanks to the current administration, islamic terrorist groups have been creating camps and working with the drug cartels in Mexico.
Sad. Much of Mexico has made great strides over the last couple of decades to climb out of third world status. Now they are fixing to just plunge right back into 3rd world hell hole.
