Bob Keeshan ... Captain Kangaroo

He was also a great war hero. He saved Lee Marvin's life, rescued those from PT 109, fought alongside Mr. Green Jeans and served Bunny Rabbit in the form of a delicious stew to hungry enlistees in his outfit.

Keeshan was in the Marines, but was still in training camp when WWII ended.

"...when on an August mid-morning our drill-instructor or DI summoned us to sit in the shade of a large, we knew something momentous was at hand."

"The DI, reading from hand-held notes, said, "The Lootenant told me to tell you that the US of A has dropped a ay-tomic bomb on Japan. I never heard of a ay-tomic bomb, but they tell me that it is like a thousand f---- tons of f---- dynamite and it looks like the f---- Japs have f---- had it. But if you think you a---- are going anywhere you are f---- wrong. So, go, go go!"

Bob Keeshan's record of accomplishments in the Second War spanned both theaters -- he helped capture the Remagen Bridge. Then, he flew home in a blizzard to prevent the suicidal Grandfather Clock from jumping off a bridge.

Actually I don't mind mocking Keeshan one bit. He was a big government liberal as evidenced by his remarks in the early 1990s titled, "The Harried, Hurried Family", stating:

Public schools are, arguably, the most democratic of this nations democratic institutions; we serve everybody, that’s everybody. If we have challenges in our schools, and most of us believe we do, the solution lies in directly addressing those challenges, the solution is not in depriving public schools of the resources to do so and shunting public funds to private, selective institutions.
