Just why aren’t the ebt-ers limited to basic meats potatoes rice vegies beans and a few other basics? The current abuse of societal caring is criminal. Those who abuse the system should be deported to Haiti.
Does the room allow cooking? I know I used to cook on a hot plate while travelling, that saved me a lot of money and frustration. Might that be an option for her?
I'd rather see folks like that get federal dollars then send my tax dollars to foreign thugs to fill their Swiss bank accounts.

Now, right from the outset of this article, let me make it abundantly clear that I do not believe that most people are abusing the system.

Like the WW2 ration program, and you should have to show up monthly with your entire brood too!

Marcella, I understand an aspect of what you say, and I agree, but I do disagree on a very important concept: it IS my business. It is my money they are doing that with.
Like you, I am not going to watch what they lay on the counter.
However, if I find myself in an environment where a person I encounter talks about engaging in that kind of treatment of money (given to that person by people like you and me) I will darn sure take exception to it.
If I didn’t have anything involved, I would agree 100% with you.
But because of the fact my money is involved, we disagree.
I just saw a tweet from a college student working part time that a customer bought 2 latte’s using EBT cards.
I saw and EBT user buying 4lbs of $8.99/lb shrimp at the grocery tonight. Peeves the hell out me.
If it were up to me, we would have ONE assistance program, a monthly cash dole. NO section 8, no food stamps, no free cell phones, no disability and not even unemployment insurance (same program). It would be the same minimal amount nationally with states free to add on if they wish.
Let them figure out how to manage their money during that month, I think they’ll figure things out within a few.
Example:
“Yo Tyrone, who you be votin foe in 2012?”
“I gots to go wit Obama baby. The democrats be givin out moe betta gibsmedat.”
I almost asked her if she could run half of my groceries - that I'd brought coupons for most -- on her LoneStar card, since I was paying for hers!
I thought I made this clear. No cooking facilities means one cannot cook in any way shape or form in the room. She cannot bring any food to her room. No hotplate, no appliances of any kind whatsoever.
About EBT cards- a lot of the reason why so many people are on it is the obvious (no jobs, and that’s a FACT)
but that it is no longer a shame to use one. The more mainstream the EBT card becomes, the more you see using them. There USED to be a stigma attached to the old “food stamp” usage. Not anymore! It’s almost de rigeur in some places to have one, in fact I think there is some EBT card envy going on.
I could legally get the EBT card. I am actually poor enough. I won’t get one, and there is a very invasive process one must go through to GET one. For one, the whole biometrics thing creeps me out. They also ask for very personal information concerning all you know, may live with (bad for those with room mates) for those of you considering getting an EBT card, please let us know if you are able to get one without taking the biometric IRIS scan. I know the SNAP program tricks people into giving up information they need not give up, for instance:
social security numbers/names of people you may live with (NOT required, but ASKED for as if it is a requirement, thus tricking people into giving up that info)
give as LEAST information as possible, and see if you are able to get an EBT card and not take the “photo” which is not a photo, but an IRIS scan.

One real factor in the multiplicity of programs is the number of bureaucrats and administrators that run them. It’s not just the recipients of the aid that benefit from all this.
Just like the post office, any “streamlining” will be opposed by a large squadron of govt employees.
What is the rent on that room? Is it section 8?
