We can no longer renew our DL online in GA. Instead we must go to the DMV. [Increased lines = longer waiting periods].

But wait......That is not all. It is not enough to go down and present my license and pay money to renew. I have to prove I am who I say I am even though I have been driving longer than I care to remember.

I need My Birth Certificate and since I am married with different last name I need my Marriage Certificate. Because of federal regulations I will need to submit proof of my identity every time I renew my DL.

Yet no one on the federal level seems to give a rat’s ass about my identity at the polls.

Renewal of Driver's License or Identification Card

The way I read this, you only have to provide ID documentation if you are applying for a GA license for the 1st time or getting one of the new “Secure ID” compliant licenses for the 1st time. After you have a Secure ID compliant license, you can renew on-line. Changing your name on your license, I think in all states that I know of, require you to appear in person with legal proof of the name change.

I had to do this, provide all sorts of proof of identity when I moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania and got my PA license. It was a PITA as at the time I was temporarily living with my niece and all my stuff including some of my legal docs were in storage and inaccessible unless I moved everything out to get to the strong box buried somewhere in the back and my nephew crawled through the storage unit and still couldn’t find it. So I had to order a certified BC from NY, which I was able to do on-line after providing all sorts of info and since I had been married, I had to drive to MD to get a copy of my marriage certificate to prove my name change. I also had to provide PennDot with proof of my address but since I was living with someone else, I had no utilities bills in my name at that address, but they did accept a copy of my bank statement. Again it was a PITA but now that I have my PA license, I can renew on-line in the future.

Yet no one on the federal level seems to give a rat’s ass about my identity at the polls.

Here in PA we do have a new voter ID law, but it wasn’t implemented in time for the last election.
