Coming Soon: A $100 Drone To Do Your Bidding

Have some aerial photography you need done? Drones aren’t just for hunting terrorists anymore. Soon, you’ll be able to buy and launch your own UAV for cheap.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)--or drones--have been used in the U.S. for over 50 years, largely for military purposes. It makes sense; drones can be used for surveillance and fighting enemies without putting pilots at risk. But there are plenty of uses for unmanned camera-equipped drones outside of the military, including documenting protest situations, monitoring fertilizer applications and water distribution on farms, and just taking pretty pictures.

Drones for Peace, a project currently working its way through the MassChallenge accelerator program, wants to bring these drones to the masses. The ultimate goal is a drone for aerial photography that sells for just $100....

Yeah. And I've been having real difficulty getting close enough to her house because of the fence and her six Dobermans. Plus, the windows are too high. This will really help a lot, thanks.

Do they have models yet that will let you stick a little microphone onto the window?

What good is a $40 million dollar drone if a $100 one can sidle up to it and blow it up or damage it?

Kamikaze drone killer. Just make sure it doesn't have any serial numbers they can pick out of the wreckage.

Just wait till the crazies get these. Think jars of acid on beach goers. Containers of gas on backyard BBQ’s. In a few years think concrete blocks on rush hour traffic. Fly them into jet engines on takeoff. Use them for recon prior to home invasions. Not to mention just kamikaze missions for kicks.

Y’all ain’t seen nuthin’ yet with the mean potential from these.

Imagine if Adam Lanza and James Holmes had had these. How many people would have died. And the perp would still be alive and the cops would still be hunting them.

Somebody needs to come up with ‘bug spray’ asap. Unfortunately it’ll probably be illegal for peasants to use.

Because no one would ever 3D print their own drone parts.

One to practice with.

I always get a "toy" at Christmas...two years ago, wifey got me a remote control helichopter. I rushed it onto it's charger.

It lasted 45 seconds in the driveway before it was irreparably crashed....broke even my impressive childhood records.

Man, you’ve got a better imagination than I do. All I could come up with was a little innocent creepy stalkin’.

My son just gave me my second quad copter for my birthday. The first was a parrot and was controlled from my ipad via wifi. This one is smaller with no cameras and only about $35 bucks.

Tell you how it works. Read the news on smokinggun from ‘things crazy people do in Florida’. Then, add drones to that.

See, that was easy...

Wonder why the pedestrian and vehicle overpasses on interstates have that heavy chain link on them now? Because back in the 70’s and 80’s, ‘deprived youths’ would drop cinder blocks on rush hour traffic. For kicks.

Imagine you’re a crazy fanatical muslim and want to ‘get’ those perverted kids frolicking on the beach at pcola for spring break. Those fanatics unfortunately choose to maim their female victims with either knives or acid. Bit tricky to do the knife thing with a drone but dropping acid would be easy.

People have NO idea what sort of interpersonal ‘revolution’ this technology is. This is bigger than the personal firearm. You can reach out and ‘touch’ someone, anonymously, silently and your imagination is the only limit for what you choose to do with this.

In 5 or 10 years when the insect sized ones are commoditized it will become trivial to fly one up to and into a home while the family is unloading groceries. What you do after that is up to you. Watch dad dial in the wall safe combination, scope out any guns or visible jewelry. Perch on the bathroom wall and watch everyone take a shower. Drop a targeted dose of poison in someone’s oatmeal or coffee. You name it.

All anonymously. With little fear of being caught with current technology.

“It lasted 45 seconds in the driveway before it was irreparably crashed”

Go with the parrot from your local hobby store. It connects to the wifi from your android or iphone. Hit the take off button on your screen and it takes off and hovers at about 3 feet. Tilt the phone or tablet and it moves in that direction, all the while streaming video back to your phone.

Hit the land button on the screen and it slowly lowers itself to the ground.

Like a lot of little companies: interesting product with a bad business model. Take the $100 UAV. Let’s take a leap and say the parts are $50. Say you build them in your garage. Say you don’t advertise. Say the shipping costs of the parts to you and the UAV to the customer are zero. Say you can build 3 a day and work 6 days a week. Your income before state/local/federal taxes, social security, medicare, Obama care tax, and unemployment insurance is about $50,000 a year. And that assumes you can sell 1,000 a year.

The one that you get for $35 on Amazon actually flies well. It includes a 2.4GH four channel transmitter. I’d practice with one of these before I tried to fly an expensive quad.
