It was probably someone concealing a pressure cooker in a fake obesity suit—or maybe between a couple of real folds.

IS THIS THE BOMBER?

Considering the fact that the first 24 hours following an event such as this is filled with total misinformation, speculate all you want.

If you're right then you can post a vanity claiming you were the one who busted the guy....or whatever.......

FBI says the backpack would have been black. This guy’s is blue. Plus he still has it on in the second picture.

If you look next to the screen or window on the left side of Pack-2.jpg there appears to be a person-of-interest standing by a metallic looking case.

He's cradling the strap of the backpack in the crook of his arm in the second picture.

I also agree about his girlfriend being next to him.

The guy has a weird look as in HE is a SHE. There is something odd about the haircut and stance.

Fox just showed a photo of what looks to be the bag that was left with the bomb in it before it detonated and it was a lot larger than this kid’s backpack would hold. Time to go back to the photos and look for a large white bag, doesn’t look plastic.

It would depend on bomb placement, and what structural obstructions are in the way to cause some of the glass to blow out as opposed to inwards.

An explosion can push all of the air away from the detonation site, which creates a partial vacuum, that air rushes back to fill. That can suck debris which is suspended in the air back towards the detonation site.

I think.

Pretty sure I have seen that on Myth Busters.

That is one big backpack. However, it’s flat so I doubt a round pressure cooker would be in it. Just how would someone get a pressure cooker in among the crowd and nobody notice?

I know I won’t use a pressure cooker. I remember stories from the old days...I have been terrified of them. Even my mom wouldn’t use one.

A pressure cooker is a danger when used properly.

Step back....I have a pressure cooker and I know how to use it.

(I’ve been using the same one for almost 40 years.)

They are saying the back pack used was black. There is one person who can be seen wearing a big black backpack in one of the photos posted here. It is a view of the person from behind. The person is also wearing a denim jacket. The person has dark hair and from the shot from the back here it appears the person may be female.

African American guy with a royal blue shirt and a Nike cap with black backpack straps showing appears in the before picture but not in the after picture. Also in the before picture he is looking at a cell phone.

Hi Mamzelle,

One of the news reports I heard (take w/ grain of salt) said that the bombs would likely have been placed w/in an hour of the attack. I wondered how they would know that and then a few minutes later they followed up with that the area had been swept for explosives about an hour before the explosions (I think with explosive detecting k-9s).

I was fortunate to see a demo of a k-9 dog trained to do explosive detection. These dogs are amazing and the training is amazing.

The handler asked someone with a large purse to volunteer, and who wasn’t going to need to go through airport security for some time (I want to say it was a month or so). He put a piece of cable in her purse (looked like co-ax, but it was a kind used to detonate explosive devices.) The dog went through the room and alerted to the cable. The reason the person couldn’t be going through airport security any time soon, is that dogs and/or electronic “sniffers” could still pick that up for the length of time specified. I wish I could recall the exact amount of time, but the demo was over a year ago.

The handler also had hidden other types of explosives around the room before bringing the dog in. They keep the explosives wrapped and handle only with gloves, so as not to get their scent on the samples. They have to get fresh samples periodically.

They do not cross-train drug sniffing dogs and explosives sniffing dogs— kind of a comical point, but if they alert, it’s like, “oh, great, is it drugs or bombs?” So, the ones for explosives are dedicated to explosives, drug dogs
to drugs.

They continue training, continue certifying/re-certifying. Drug sniffing dogs when tested can have up to (IIRC) 2 missed alerts. The thought being that if the dog misses a baggie of pot, it’s not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. Bomb sniffing dogs cannot miss an alert.

If the team gets a call for a suspicious package, they go and investigate. The handler told of a case where another police agency called and said they had a bomb and would they bring the k-9 out for it. The handler said, “No, you’ve already identified it as a bomb.” At that stage, they need to call in the bomb squad.

They do train also for tracking suspects. I’ve worked with training dogs for agility and the type of training done for that is mostly by commission. Do x, do y, do z. Some of the training for k-9s is by omission. They can have put 4 people in a car, then have 3 present and one missing (hidden). They have the dog scent the 3 people who are left, and the dog has been trained and knows to search the scents of the one (or more than one, depending) who isn’t present.

Based on the demonstration and explanation of how things work, I believe that yes, bomb-sniffing dogs would be able to detect explosives in a pressure cooker. Likely, the person making it would have left residue around it. But even if if they were extremely careful about that, I believe that the dogs would still have alerted, despite it being sealed.

I may not get out much, but I have never seen a bomb-sniffing dog at work—that is, working. Let’s see if any pictures show those hourly bomb sniffers! I sorta think we won’t. Dogs don’t vote, and don’t get union jobs...

I don’t know that they were out there hourly, and never said that— only that it was reported that there happened to have been a sweep an hour before the explosions.

The team I got to see working end up working at many public events with large crowds— sporting events, political events, etc. There likely would have been dogs and handlers working the crowd at such a large, public event.

I don’t know whether we’ll see any evidence of there having been any dogs out working. Depends on what the media wants to show, depends on who turns in footage, posts to youtube, etc.

How is this not irresponsible speculation?

Because it is not "irresponsible". People have been asked to help and people are trying.

IMO the kid has the blue/black backpack on his back and in the second photo, the blue/black backpack is cradled across his left elbow by the straps. I could be wrong but if any of us can help then we should.

A pressure cooker is a danger when used properly. I've seen more than a few FReepers say they won't use one.

Not a chance that I would use the old style cookers. The new ones though can't blow up unless they are filthy dirty. We love them now.

I agree that it is flat. I say that it is a portable folding chair. At the top of the “pack” you can see the wooden bar that is the top of the backrest and the bottom the silver colored legs that fold out.

I would also wager that the handle was removed from the 6 quart pressure cooker to make it easier to tote around.

I thought it may be a Presto.
