Heh.

That depends on what the word 'in' means. /Bill Clinton

Seriously, you're splitting hairs here. And, actually, Blair does deviate from the usual 'a few extremists' rhetoric with his statement, contrary to what you assert:

"But I am afraid this strain is not the province of a few extremists. It has at its heart a view about religion and about the interaction between religion and politics that is not compatible with pluralistic, liberal, open-minded societies." (Tony Blair, in the first link I provided, and may he rot in hell anyway)

That is more outspoken than anything I've read from any British 'top politician' or 'elder statesman' since Winston Churchill or Enoch Powell. But I get that you will defend Greenfield, right or wrong. Me, I just take every statement as it comes, and will criticize where criticism is due. Anyway, do you have a source for the quote I initially cited?

Sorry, no citation. I was using your paraphrase. As to supporting Greenfield come hell or high water, perhaps. I have found criticism is often shallower than those who are critiqued. Meanings can run deep and germinal thought is rarely superficial. I tend to struggle with my lack of understanding rather than simply dismiss that which I do not understand as wrong.
Not saying you are dismissing out of hand. Your quote seems to be a good one and Blair’s comment pretty clear. I would like to evaluate it in light of his commitment to “pluralistic, liberal, open-minde3d societies.”
It would be nice to think western culture is on the cusp of enlightenment in spite of the blatant stupidity and arrogance of our own POTUS.
Thanks for the post.

Not to butt in too much here, but Blair does call it a strain and it saying that the root of islam's foundations aren't what drive it (the murderous behavior of the multitudinous factions of islam).

That is the difference between the all encompassing WITH vs. the much restrained and intentionally disarming meme he presents when using the term "within".

While that be more outspoken, Blair does manage to split hairs pretty darned fine to begin with...

Re-read the sentence you posted with the emphasis added in this way: "But I am afraid this strain is not the province of a few extremists. It has at its heart a view about religion and about the interaction between religion and politics that is not compatible with pluralistic, liberal, open-minded societies."

I intentionally do not capitalize the word islam, I find that it doesn't deserve the reverence it receives when done...
