Blacks benefit from Florida ‘Stand Your Ground’ law at disproportionate rate

African Americans benefit from Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” self-defense law at a rate far out of proportion to their presence in the state’s population, despite an assertion by Attorney General Eric Holder that repealing “Stand Your Ground” would help African Americans.

Black Floridians have made about a third of the state’s total “Stand Your Ground” claims in homicide cases, a rate nearly double the black percentage of Florida’s population. The majority of those claims have been successful, a success rate that exceeds that for Florida whites.

Nonetheless, prominent African Americans including Holder and “Ebony and Ivory” singer Stevie Wonder, who has vowed not to perform in the Sunshine State until the law is revoked, have made “Stand Your Ground” a central part of the Trayvon Martin controversy.

If I understand Rush Limbaugh correctly, this would not matter to liberals. The goal is to get guns out of the hands of private citizens so that we are all more dependent on the State. The fact presented here that it saves the lives of blacks is a barrier to that goal.

Detroit has the highest justifiable homicide rate in the nation. I'm guessing those are about 90% attacker and defender.

In 1926 Detroit, Doctor Ossian Sweet stood his ground against a white mob trying to force him out of "their" neighborhood, killing one man.



Sweet was acquitted and the first gun control bill in the state was introduced within 3 weeks. It called for registration and gun boards to determine who could own a gun. Blacks were almost always excluded.

Sweet was defended by Clarence Darrow. This story has a violent event, racial tension, and a famous trial involving the NAACP, and one of the most well-known lawyers of all time. Seems like it would make a compelling movie. I wonder why Hollywood has never picked up this story. HAHAHAHAHA!

The NRA has a history of supporting the Civil Rights Movement.

While African Americans were being terrorized by the Ku Klux Klan, where the Klan were sometimes aided by local law enforcement, the NRA setup charters to help train local African American communities to be able protect themselves. The most prominent case being in 1960 in Monroe, N.C. where the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People head Robert Williams also chartered an NRA Rifle Club that successully defended an assault on one of their leader’s homes by the KKK without casualties.

The libs apparently don’t want you to defend yourself when confronted, your life is endangered, and there is no avenue of escape. That is what “stand your ground” affords victims of violent crime: an alternative. It’s removal would benefit criminals. No law-abiding, non-violent person needs to fear “stand your ground” laws.
