I know this won’t make you feel better, but this is typical of the tactics used by political groups back in the early 19th century.

Your point is valid in terms of libel and defamation. On that level today’s elections are milquetoast compared to 1800 (J. Adams vs. Jefferson) and 1824 (J.Q. Adams vs. Jackson). But there was nothing back then to compare with today’s corruption and raw treason at the highest level of national government. If any of the mentioned candidates and presidents could see what is happening they would weep (well, Jackson would probably shoot some folks).
