Your wish is granted. It’s a matter of “familiarity breeds contempt”, or really “familiarity leads to disinterest.”

A great example is Arizona, where police truly do not give a hoot if someone is open or concealed carry. They pay attention to the person, not their tools. Of course, anyone foolish or insane enough to draw down on an AZ cop is most likely a dead man.

As far as taking a gun after the fact, for forensic purposes they almost have to. They need to do a gelatin test to insure that each and every slug they pull out of Tyrone he earned.

However, that being said, it’s a good reason to have a primary and alternate gun, in case one is “laid up in the shop”.

yes but many places make it very difficult to get your own gun back, and often it’s damaged by writing on it,etc.
