Papal Biographer: Interview Was 'Classic Francis'

Papal biographer Dr. Matthew Bunson tells Newsmax that there was no new church doctrine made in Pope Francis’ widely published interview on Thursday but that the Pontiff’s personable style was “classic Francis.”

The senior correspondent for Our Sunday Visitor and author of the new book "Pope Francis," was not surprised by the interview, in which the Pontiff said that the Catholic Church should not allow its bans on gay marriage, abortion and contraception to dominate its teachings.

“There’s nothing new here. He’s not changing church doctrine in any way,” asserted Bunson in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

“I think he’s helping Catholics to contextualize the wider enterprise evangelization that actually began under Popes Benedict XVI and John Paul II.”

In a dramatically blunt interview with Civilta Cattolica, the Italian Jesuit monthly, Francis also said the Church had locked itself up in "small things, in small-minded rules” and must find a new balance between upholding rules and demonstrating mercy "otherwise even the moral edifice of the Church is likely to fall like a house of cards.”

Having written the first English-language biography of the popular new head of the Catholic Church, Bunson said that some church leaders were probably caught off guard by the interview, which was approved in advance by Francis.

Just heard a snippet of his remarks on SeeBS, but it seems to me he should be preaching salvation through faith in Jesus Christ instead of essentially saying “Hey, we’re caring and relevant, too”.

seems to me the Mormons did the same thing....changed their long held practices that they considered straight from their god Joseph Smith so they could get along with the US govt....

sounds now like we're not supposed to be so upset about abortions or homosexual "marriage" and be more concerned with what exactly?....bingo receipts?

Everyone needs to chill.

Read what's between the quotation marks, and ignore the rest. You'll feel a lot better.

This should be standard conservative practice in reading anything in the enemedia.

Yeah, don't be so narrow-minded. But who am I to judge?

Read what's between the quotation marks, and take the rest with a grain of salt.

“It is amazing to see the denunciations for lack of orthodoxy that come to Rome. I think the cases should be investigated by the local bishops’ conferences, which can get valuable assistance from Rome. These cases, in fact, are much better dealt with locally. The Roman congregations are mediators; they are not middlemen or managers.”

So if bishops are radical heretics or support radical heretics, the faithful can no longer count on the support of Rome? Theology and liturgy are now diocesan or even congregational matters? The Universal Church is only universal in its good feelings towards all?

Or am I being small-minded worrying about rules? Why the slap against faithful Catholics standing up for the faith?

Houston, we have a problem.

“What is worrying, though, is the risk of the ideologization of the Vetus Ordo, its exploitation.”

Yeah, that’s the big problem with the liturgy.

“If the Christian is a restorationist, a legalist, if he wants everything clear and safe, then he will find nothing. Tradition and memory of the past must help us to have the courage to open up new areas to God. Those who today always look for disciplinarian solutions, those who long for an exaggerated doctrinal ‘security,’ those who stubbornly try to recover a past that no longer exists—they have a static and inward-directed view of things.”

Katie bar the door.

And that’s the problem. He DID say that. The media has massively distorted what he said and you only listened to a snippet. Go read what he said.

Why is leaving it not an option?

Christ can be found outside the Catholic church, ya know.

I read his entire interview. If people did that, they would understand the context and what he actually said. If they read paraphrased cherry picked out of context “statements”, they’ll get a distorted and misleading presentation of his views.

Naturally the media will distort whatever any Pope says.
