When that things blows, we go way backwards in time, and 0bummerCare isn't going to help out all that much. Look at the Mt St Helens ash plume comparison. Too bad so many blue cities/states will be unaffected.

For one thing, I've become a little concerned with the accuracy of recent USGS data. I actually stopped bothering to keep tract last year because of the number of times the initial magnitude lowered, especially around the Mag 5 level.
As I suggested, look at 5+, NOT mag 5 - 6...

Your chart looks totally phony.
Look at the actual statistics from the USGS website:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/year/eqstats.php
The real stats show a big drop in the number of earthquakes for 2012 compared to prior years, while your chart shows an upward spike.
2013 is mostly done, but so far 2013 has less than half the number of 5.0+ quakes as 2011.

The real stats show a big drop in the number of earthquakes for 2012 compared to prior years, while your chart shows an upward spike. Wouldn't surprise me. There were some additional discrepancies that cropped up causing me to wonder about the accuracy of recent USGS data. I have the original (raw) USGS data stored, so I could really care less what you think. ;-)
