Private sales are the safety valve that prevents gun registration. Gun Registration is Gun Confiscation.

Some people imply that "background checks" are a public good. They are not. They are the precursor of a registry, which is effective confiscation, a great evil. This was made clear when senators refused to vote for a background check system that was designed to be private and make a registry impossible. It was voted down this year.Coburn's proposal, while ever so slightly more anonymous than the present system falls short. The government still receives real time information on who's buying or probably buying. They only thing they don't get is the serial number(s) of the firearms purchased if any. I (and no doubt others) have conceived a truly, provably, anonymous NICS scheme for anyone who really thinks a check is needed at all.

Buying a firearm through a dealer guarantees that you’ll be subject to being raided, or at the very least forced to turn over all firearms that you may have in your possession. It’s just a matter of when.
