A lot of that 1913 list wasn’t actually that simple in 1913. Before assembly lines manufactured goods really were made by hand and represented a lot of man hours. And perishable goods like fresh fruit and candy with the transportation network we had then weren’t easy to come by, especially in winter when travel gets harder.
Astounding story in WSJ this week that a Chinese yarn manufacturer is moving to S. Carolina because the cost equation has reversed.
