Each generation thinks it’s music is the best.
.
maybe, but prior generations sang and performed their music not lip synched and worked their way up- not manufactured stars
The original poster did not just address the superiority of earlier styles but also the fact that today’s acts are largely studio created marketing vehicles. Many do not perform live but rather lip sync to recordings.
On the other hand, no one has suggested that these acts are on the New Years Eve shows due to demographics. They are pop music acts, not rockers.

I'm on the later end of Gen X. The late boomers and early X'ers had the best music. I just missed it born in the 70's, but most of those bands released stuff in my time as well so I grew up with some of it.
1970's had the best music. Rock competed with Disco and it brought out the best. Led Zepplin, Credence (both in 60's as well), ZZ Top, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Bros, Robin Trower, UFO, Motorhead, and Van Halen. Early 80's had Def Leppard (early stuff was good), Motley Crue, and Iron Maiden.

I think there was plenty of crappy music that dominated the airwaves (radio and television) as I was growing up in the 70s and 80s and 90s and 21st century onwards.
And that isn't to say that I don't run across plenty of crappy and mediocre music "hits" in the used record bins either.
