Jim, I'm amazed by your Sept 13, 2001 post, the one that you linked to in this thread (your post #7 here). You saw the situation perfectly back then, and what you predicted has, sadly, come true.
And both you and grania are correct. Afghanistan and Iraq were Bush II's to win or lose. But Bush wouldn't make the really tough decisions. And so we will lose both wars.
Al-Qaeda is able to return to Iraq because Bush never destroyed them.
To blame Obama now is like blaming Nixon or Ford for the loss of Vietnam. Vietnam belonged to LBJ. Iraq and Afghanistan belong to Bush.

How people love to bash Bush, when really, truly, and actually there exists a Congress that fully supported the action.

I hear John MeCain is flying over for a photo-op with the “Freedom Fighters”.

When George Bush left office the War in Iraq was won. A war in which victory must be preserved by an open-ended commitment of continued expenditure of blood and money is no victory at all. The old conservative reputation for superior national security prowess can not be regained with such foolish defenses of Bush's incompetence.

None of these stories points out exactly how al Qaeda gets all these men into Anbar: because the "rebel" group controlling northern and eastern Syria is the al-Qaeda affiliate, called ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). This "rebel" group does no fighting against the Assad forces and instead serves as a conduit for foreign jihadis to enter Iraq.
