I wouldn’t consider the ex-RINO running (former state del. Joe May who was beaten in his last primary by a wide margin by now State Del. Dave LaRock and quit the party in a fit of pique when he failed to be given this nomination for this Senate seat) as an indie to be part of “the right” but his presence in the race probably eliminates any chance of winning this rat-leaning seat. (I think it’s rat leaning, Herring won it fairly easily)
Doesn’t help that the Republican John Whitbeck, once told a joke that was labeled “anti-semitic”. It wasn’t, just unfunny.
According to another WAPO article (endorsing the rat of course)
claims Whitbeck is “not a serious candidate” because of this joke. Yeah right.
I think my uncle lives in this district.
VA state senate district 33 went heavily Democrat in 2012, going for Obama 59%-39% over Romney and for Kaine 60%-40% over Allen. In 2009, it was carried by the three GOP statewide candidates, with 55% for McDonnell and 52% for Bolling and Cuccinelli.

I don’t have 2013 election results by state senate district.
For the sake of comparison, state senate district 6 (the one with the too-close-to-call special election last week) gave Obama 57% and Kaine 58% in 2012 and gave McDonnell 54%, Bolling 50% and Cuccinelli 52% in 2009, so SD-33 appears to be 2% more Democrat in federal elections but like 1% more Republican in state executive elections. http://www.vpap.org/elections/district/26
