Concealed carry of handguns in California without a permit became illegal in 1924. In 1967 the law was passed to prohibit carrying loaded firearms in public (though possessors of concealed carry permits still could carry loaded firearms).
I grew up in Southern California in the 1950s and 1960s. As kids we used to walk down the street with loaded .22 rifles to go hunt rabbits, shoot cans, etc. We did this until just around my junior year in high school (1967).
