Past use has also been shown to have an effect on offspring, even if they are born long after the marijuana use. Marijuana also precipitates psychotic disorders, although it is not clear (to me, at least) whether it causes people who are already predisposed to become psychotic, or if it can happen to anyone.

Bottom line, marijuana use is not comparable to alcohol.

Truthfully, alcohol is damned deadly stuff. It is in the same class as automobile accidents as far as mortality goes, so comparing it with other things, even drugs, will most always be wanting.

Mortality associated with marijuana is both indirect and indeterminate, after a quarter century of research. At most it is a fraction of a percent, within the margin of error of other conditions.
