Compared to past wars this kind of mistake is rare. Just finished reading Rick Atkinson's An Army at Dawn (N. Africa and Sicily) and The Guns at Last Light (Italy). The number of foul ups that led to American deaths and casualties from our own fire was staggering. And thank G*d there were no US casualties in this case.

The Air Force has been dropping bombs on the U.S. Army since their Air Corps days. It used to be much, much worse. The Marine Corps has always done a much better job at close air support, but even they are not perfect.
