Kerry tried to act like Obama's strongman in Syria and we walked away from that with egg on his horse face. The new mantra is economic sanctions.
Economic sanctions could do some immediate and severe pain to the Russian economy, however they have endured more severe pains and purges than western liberals could ever dish out. I would suggest sending a group of liberals to Russia and have them spout off all day long. That would be too much to endure for anyone.

Russia will do whatever it wants because the US has proven it is incapable of doing what it has to do.

Look at Putin like the landlord from the Honeymooners. If Putin cuts power to Europe, takes East Ukraine, then you will get a complete out of control, bank run across the EU.
The markets just rallied because the belief is "Crisis Averted". This is a marathon, not a sprint. While it will look like nothing is happening on Monday, the Crimea will vote to go Russian, Ukraine's illegal government will shriek in horror and Obama will play golf or go to a party. This will go on for quite some time. I expect the current administration to completely abandon the Ukraine after conceding Crimea. They are boxed in and have no aces in the hand of jokers.
