Mathematical illiterates are celebrating New York City’s new 1.6 MW solar power project

AFP reports:

On a rooftop in the Bronx far from the skyscrapers of Manhattan, 4,760 panels soak up the winter rays. Welcome to the solar power boom in New York state.

Robert Kline, director of commercial sales for the Ross Solar Group that installed the panels, is delighted.

“It is the largest (solar) installation in the history of New York City,” he tells AFP.

The 1.6-megawatt installation on the Jetro Cash and Carry has been proudly singled out by New York governor Andrew Cuomo as a prime example of a drive to haul the state into a new dawn.

I’m not disputing the claim that this is “the largest solar installation in the history of New York City.”

However, I am disputing the claim that his is a “boom” for solar power.

The Ravenswood Generating Station is one of many power plants that provides electricity for New York. It makes its electricity by burning fossil fuels, and it produces 2,410 MW.

If we wanted to replace this one fossil fuel power plant with solar power, it would require building more than 1,500 additional solar power projects of the same size as “the largest solar installation in the history of New York City.”

If this solar power plant is a “boom,” it would take more than 1,500 additional “booms” just to be able to shut down this one fossil fuel power plant.

And even that grossly understates the situation, because the claimed power rating for those solar panels is only applicable when the sun is directly overhead, and there are no clouds.

If the sun isn’t directly overhead, its power output would be less than the rated maximum.

If the sky was cloudy, its power output would be less than the rated maximum.

And if it was night, its power output would be zero.

The solar power plant would have to have a backup power source, and that backup power source would almost certainly be… something that burned fossil fuels.

If there is ever a solar power plant in New York that uses batteries to store its sun-derived energy for use at night, and is able to reliably and continuously produce at least 1,000 MW of electricity at any and all times of the day or night, then that would indeed be a “boom” for solar power in New York.

The sunlight, wind and weather, takes its toll on these solar panels. I’ve seen them crumbling after only a decade. And, I wonder at what cost to the roof maintenance and repair?

I was thinking the same thing. 1.6 MW is tiny. And the environmentalists claim it takes up space where wildlife would otherwise inhabit.

If the panels are dirty, their power output would be less than maximum.

If the panels are covered in snow or ice, their power output would be less than maximum.

If the panels are covered in bird sh1t, their power output would be less than maximum.

If the panels break...

AFP reports:

Then why not just post from there and make your comments about it?

What is gained by adding your blog as a third-party?

From 2006

Carlyle Group To Invest in Renewables

Just days after President George W. Bush announced the U.S. would invest more in R&D for renewable energy technologies, one of the world’s largest investment firms, the Carlyle Group, said it would substantially boost its stake in renewables. Coincidentally, former President George H. W. Bush was a special consultant to the Carlyle Group for 10 years before his retirement two years ago.

Carlyle eyes renewable energy, predicts IPOs
Reuters News Service, Feb. 22, 2006
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - The Carlyle Group is set to boost its investment in the renewable energy sector as demand from U.S. state entities is rising, the firm’s founder and managing director, David Rubenstein, said on Wednesday.

“We intend to be much more active in the wind, power, solar energy, biomass and geothermal areas,” Rubenstein said.
“We think it’s an extremely attractive area in which to invest, particularly because many states in the U.S. now require that utilities buy a certain percentage of their energy from solar, biomass, geothermal or wind power sources,” he told Reuters at a private equity conference in Frankfurt where he also predicted that some buyout firms would go public within the next several years.

To meet the energy demand, Carlyle, one of the world’s largest private equity firms, is raising a fund that will invest in renewable energy infrastructure, sources familiar with the matter said.

Carlyle declined to comment on the fund. Rubenstein did, however, say the firm was set to launch a hedge fund within the next several weeks after announcing the move last year.
Soaring oil prices have prompted state and federal governments to explore alternative sources.

U.S. President George Bush in his State of the Union address outlined details of a federal initiative to provide a 22 percent increase in clean-energy research. The U.S. government’s 2007 budget includes $44 million for wind energy research, a $5 million increase from the year before.

I’m quite familiar with Carlyle as they acquired my former employer. They are based in DC, and likely the most well connected politically of private equity groups.

These days Carlyle is buying trailer parks, which tells you where the insider view of the future economy is.

It’s feel good boosterism at best.

Figure a 25% capacity factor on solar in Brooklyn, so 1.4 MW becomes 0.35 MW. The fossil plant should clock in at 85% or 2410 MW becomes 2050 or 6000 times larger than the solar revolution.

Ping me when they get close.

Not to say that in a place like Las Vegas, solar would not work. Higher capacity factors, plenty of roof tops from parking lots alone. Spread out. Not to mention adjacent desert.

I hope they get all those panel put in and up a running before one of those big summer hail storms comes and changes their minds.

Trailer parks and nursing homes.

We will be living in one or the other.

I doubt they believe in it as much as they figure they can make money from it.

Like they say - follow the money.

I’ll admit, for a second I was impressed. Then I realized that I was thinking of GIGAwatts, not MEGAwatts.

and at sunset, there is no solar power....the average winter’s day in NYC about 5 hrs of sunshine, assuming, no overcast, or snow storms.....money down the drain....

And you still need the fossil plant for backup - together with all its capital expenditure and operational cost to keep it in standby condition.

A blog is allowed to quote and comment on a source. The actual article had already been posted. My title is better than that of the original article.

The questions to ask here is whose brother-in-law is getting the taxpayer money and how much is the democratic party cut?
