Used book stores often have encyclopedia sets for cheap. The best ones are before the mid-60s. I've got a 1962 set of Encyclopedia Britannica. It actually has diagrams/formulas that are useful for technical subjects.

Might want to stash an encyclopedia or one of those how to fix anything books.I have a bookshelf full of Mother Earth magazines from the 70's. Lots of interesting projects in there.
