My Mom used the word colored up through the early 90's. Until some friends gently corrected her. She doesn't have a racist bone in her body - it was the term yankees used in upstate NY when growing up in her era.

And that was what was considered “polite” at the time.
It’s not her (or our) fault that the definition of “polite” keeps changing with the political whims of the left.
