More funny (re-branding) business from Jan Brewer

The latest news from the governor’s office is that Jan Brewer is expected to call the state legislature into a special session to revamp Child Protective Services, the troubled child-welfare agency that shamefully neglected to investigate well over 6,000 reports of child abuse and neglect. Here is her press release on what is rightly termed an “inexcusable situation” and “unconscionable practices.”

But in re-crafting the agency, Brewer is doing what she does so well. She’s renaming it.

In this press release she announced her Obama-like “Executive Order” craftily renaming Common Core, Obama’s approved federal takeover of America’s education system. Note that the words “Common Core” are mysteriously missing as she re-dubs the objectionable program “Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards.”

I couldn’t find the year that Florida’s child welfare department was established. But I recall that it has had almost 44,000 children pretty much continuously in its “care” for decades. Every year they lose a few and a couple are murdered. Sometimes the kids are just administratively misplaced. Sometimes they’ve been kidnapped and nobody knows for months. They rebranded by changing the agency’s name. They reorganized by dividing it among other agencies. They’ve “privatiezed” and then reversed that. Still, about the same number each year are “lost,” kidnapped or murdered. I’ve come to the conclusion that a bureaucracy can’t actually “care” for or about people. To ask a bureaucrat to “care” for somebody is like asking them to care whether the number in column A is a one or a zero when it matters not in the least to them what it is. This is the nature of bureaucracies, not to “care” about people they are not related to and, for the most part, have never even seen. Those people are a number. It matters not what number they are. Witness the VA lying so that people die…just to improve their statistics.

Before these agencies, when the sheriff arrested somebody (where many children come from) that arrested person had the responsibility of finding somebody to take care of their child. But because a few couldn’t a huge organization was set up at massive cost so that now all children it can take under its wing, not just those who don’t have other relatives who will step up, are put into state “care.” Where, they are lost, kidnapped or murdered.

I remember reading in The Spectator in 2007 about some of Benghazi Barry’s policies—one included The U.N. Convention on the Child, which sounded like it would take parents’ rights to raise their child as they saw fit away from them, and whatever the U.N. found appropriate for the child usurps the parent’s wishes...ya know...”It Takes A Village.”

I know someone who works in the Florida department of children. (The name has been rebranded several times and I don’t recall today’s name.) He told me that they are currently “missing” 450 children out of approximately 44,000. The number missing or possibly dead is never lower than that. Yet I can’t find a single mention online. Several years ago when I wrote about this I found more than sufficient information with little effort. Today I can find only the dismal Governor Bush failures at privatization. (Actually, I don’t know that they were failures. I believe they simply didn’t improve the numbers much over the dismal ongoing bad numbers you get with the state running things. I do know this from personal experience; it is almost impossible for grandparents to “rescue” a child from state care. The department gets thousands of dollars for each child each month and THAT is power.)

My family knows first hand the nightmare of dealing with the Child Protective Services (CPS) in Arizona. Our son and two grandchildren are victims of this bureaucratic mess they call CPS.

Our adult son has been embattled with them for almost two years trying to get custody of his own kids. His ex-wife had unofficial custody of the two kids, (no court order or legal requirement....just the way it happened) when they split up. She was living with a ex-felon, drug dealer who was decades older than her and they were both actively doing hard drugs. She refused to let our son (the kids’ biological father) see his own kids. CPS got involved when she had a third child with the ex-felon, and they took the kids away from her and gave them to her father (the maternal grandfather) in temporary custody, without ever seeking out our son for custody. She told them out of spite that he wasn’t around, when, in fact, he was. Then it got even more complicated when the mother was killed in a one-car rollover accident. She was high on drugs and driving too fast on a rain slick freeway.

When our son heard about her death, he went to a judge to get custody and the judge told him he needed a death certificate first. By the time he got it and returned to court with the proper documentation, the judge told him his hands were tied because CPS was now involved and by law, he had to let that process take its course. We hired a lawyer at great expense when our son’s court-appointed lawyer showed up 20 minutes late for the first hearing and it was postponed after our son took off work to be there. Since then, CPS has jacked our son around, requiring drug-testing regularly, parenting classes, counseling, psychiatric exams, you name it, he’s done it. And yet they still refuse to give him his two kids because they have hitched their wagon to the maternal grandfather who hates our son and they don’t want to admit they erred in not seeking out our son as soon as the mother died, to give him custody.

As it stands now, CPS is refusing to back off of a recommendation to sever our son’s parental rights because they don’t think he would be a good parent. This, even after countless CPS-monitored visitations with the kids and the father, where the monitors report no problems between the kids and their father. The judge is supposed to decide the final outcome in August (over 2 & 1/2 years after the mother died). Our attorney says they have made it difficult for our son to get the kids at every turn, from scheduling visitations in the middle of the work-week days, classes and counseling sessions 3 or 4 nights a week. Our son has lost two jobs from having missed so much work to accommodate their unreasonable demands.

It is apparent to our son, my wife and I and our lawyer, that CPS has been making every effort not to reunite the father with the kids and continues to spend taxpayer monies by dragging, what should be a routine case, out over such a long period of time. If you think it is a nightmare to deal with the DMV or the post office or ObamaCare, wait until you see how incompetent and power-hungry the bureaucrats at CPS are when you are trying to reunite kids with their parents. They refuse to let go and move on to the next case. This is but one real example of why Gov. Brewer is having to revamp the entire program. That’s because it doesn’t function properly. The government shouldn’t be making decisions about people and their kids. That is not their function.
