I never told her when I got back. My mother was an abusive woman herself (think joan crawford type). She didnt care. I never could communicate with her. She sent me to summer camp just to get rid of me for a while. She saw these summer camps as a free of charge babysitting service.
No, I didnt go back. That would be my last summer going to camp. My mother didnt send me to camp the next year.
What year was that?
1981. Last year I went to camp.
Is that camp still there?
It was not permitted for me. I never, ever went to a sleep over birthday party or spent the night at a friend's house.
I turned 16 in '76, my daughter turns 16 in 3 weeks and was picked up from school this afternoon by a friend's grandmother and I won't see her until Sunday afternoon. 2 weeks from today I will have that same friend, and another here for the weekend. My daughter and I are doing "coffee" hour after services at Church that Sunday and her friends love preparing and serving the food and attending service with us. Her friend prefers garden chores at our house, and my daughter prefers the chhicken chores at her house!
I have no idea if the camp is still there. I cant even remember the name of the camp (im glad of that though).
Only things I would add to the “fun stuff” list:
Horseback riding on dead broke old horse, bareback, no bridle, saddle or helmet, just a couple of loops of rope around his nose.
Climbing trees.
“Helping” Dad with building projects such as retaining walls, a pole barn, fences, additions to house.
Collecting butterflies.
Studyign the night sky and figuring out the constellations.
Working on a neighbor’s farm, baling hay, cleaning stalls, pulling weeds, painting stuff, whatever needed to be done.
#11. Pitch a tent in the backyard. This will be your bedroom until Labor Day.
