I spent years reading Water Meters. I never got out of the truck with out a pocket full of Dog Treats. Had a bag in the truck as backups. Never got bit or chased. Show no fear, offer the treat and you’re in, read meter, pass out another treat and move on.

If I was the parent I would have searched my own basement before calling the cops. That’s still no excuse for the cops killing someone else’s dog.
Those dogs have a lot of nerve providing security without joining a union.
When I was growing up, we had a good watchdog who would bark up a storm if a stranger whom she didn’t recognize approached the house and no doubt would have attacked him had he entered the yard. So she would have fit the cop’s description as “aggressive.” However, in those days, cops didn’t barge into people’s back yards as they do today.
You probably have no problem that cannot be made worse by calling the police.
Anybody who knows dos knows you don’t go into a strange dog’s yard without the owner’s permission and being introduced to the dog. After all, law abiding people keep dogs for warning and protection because of dogs’ basic territorial nature. Cops also just don’t have any legal right to barge into peoples’ yards, especially when they could ask permission and get it.

Huh...I thought that LEOs were taught at the academy that their badge gives them the right to go anywhere they want to for any reason...They sure act that way...

the very first SWAT raid in Elmira ~20 miles south of here had a blue on blue killing, the mutt what did the shooting became officer friendly in one of the schools till it retired...
Carrying Mail for 24 years, I’ve been bitten more times than I care to count, and have built up immunities to dog venom. Every dog paid a price, and I’ve killed a red chow attached to my calf...I don’t tolerate an ill behaved animal. Customer said they was gonna “sue yo cracka ass”, and I let them know that my counter suit would give me a rental home, and they would be homeless.
That said, dogs are smart. They instinctively know that animals on two feet can kick their ass, thus, they bow-up. 99.9 percent start raising hell when you approach, and quit after you leave their territory. They’ve done their job, and “chased” you away.
Ma, you’re 100% spot on...”show no fear”, and I would add, show that you are dominate...the aggressor. The Post Office says “ don’t make eye contact, and back away slowly.”, and I say BS...bow-up and make the dog back down, BUT DON’T FRIGGIN SHOOT ‘EM!
Cops are wimps. Weimaraners are as gentle as, and a little dumber than Labradors.
