Repealing Prohibition did not eliminate the Mob in this country, it didn't even get them out of the liquor business.

Nor did it make them less violent. The militarization of the police has been driven by the increasing militancy, and heavily arming of the gangs.

“Repealing Prohibition did not eliminate the Mob in this country”

No, they just went into other banned things like gambling and illegal drugs.

I drove by one of the Cherokee Nation offices a few weeks back. They have an MRAP. There aren’t many “heavily armed gangs” using IEDs made from old 152mm arty rounds in Tahlequah and Muskogee. They don’t need an MRAP and their acquisition of one was not driven by crime.

“The lush traffic in alcohol beverages during the violent years of 1920 to 1933 had laid the base of organization for a number of criminal gangs. The termination of the ban on liquor deprived these gangs of their most lucrative source of money” - Special Committee to Investigate Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce
