My cable bill jumped a bunch this month. When I asked why, several promotions had expired etc etc etc.
Anyway, the service rep at Time Warner gave me a better price on a package deal that includes cable TV, internet and phone service.
A question I have is about continuity of their phone service if the cable/power goes out. It does happen sporatically here.
Stay away from “bundle” deals - that’s their way to lock you in. It is a pain in the a** to unbundle them, if you don’t like one of the services.
FWIW My brother lives in Moore OK and during both tornadoes over the past few years he said cell phone service failed. It was eerie because in some of the houses that were absolutely flattened, he could hear land line phones still ringing.
When the cable goes out, the phone will not work, UPS or not. A UPS is also not much good if power is out for days.
During a hurricane, the cable is the first to go out & the last to come back on. I suspect the cable co. is securing its equipment until the storm passes.
As for the old phone line, yeah , it stays on through the storm, UNLESS a tree or limb falls on the lines.
My cellphone seem to be the most reliable comm. device during a storm.
It depends on where you live. In a high rise with underground cabling a storm may not affect your service, but if you live in the country, a bad storm will likely knock down lines & interrupt your service.

Ah, I have been thinking of Magic Jack if I can figure it out. I refuse to buy bundles when I don’t use the phone much and have a digital converter box for free TV. I just moved and do not want to go back to Verizon Landline phone service. When I had it, I used Netzero for my internet DSL ....not too expensive, but you need to have a landline. Without that, you have to revert to a cable internet connection (TWC in my area) or Freestanding (or Dry Loop) DSL. Earthlink offers freestanding DSL.
My concern w/Time Warner Cable is that I heard complaints of prices going way up, even if you just use them for internet connection. I need to watch my pennies.
I also noticed that you can get Straight Talk home phone service which looks like it’s wireless service....I need to investigate if a wireless home phone service would work with the wireless version of Netzero. I’m not tech saavy enough to understand some of this stuff.
My cell phone is AT&T Gophone, which is pay as you go. It served me just fine while I was condo-hunting and had no perm. place to live.
We are looking to relace our verizon land line with OOMA.
Anyone wuse this service?
Is it possible to have 2-3 handsets with the service?
I have a friend in Indiana who uses Ooma, but I was under the impression that Ooma was just for TV....it wasn’t a phone line kind of thing. Something else for me to research!
She says Ooma works fine but again, I don’t know details on if/how it replaces a landline. They use Frontier for internet and vonage VOIP thru their PC for their telephone. You need some kind of high speed internet in order to use VOIP, I believe.
Oops, I stand corrected. She does not use Ooma, they have Roku thing for TV. They use Vonage for the phone which does require a high speed internet connection.
No live sports - but you can stream them on your computer.
