REMEMBERING
The Democrats and their obsessive hatred of George Bush were fundamentally responsible for breaking that unity. Once they got over the shock, they went right back to their attacks - but unfortunately, since he happened to be leading the war, this meant that they attacked it, too. This was not because they wanted it to be more effective against the enemy, Islam, but because they wanted to undermine Bush.
The same has always been true. Except for a brief period when the Popes rallied the squabbling European leaders to fight back with the Crusades (at least the first one), most of them were too busy attacking each other to develop any unified front against Islam. Meanwhile, as the writer points out, while Muslims fight among each other, the only thing that really matters to all of them is the ultimate triumph of Islam and its crushing of all resistance.
