Alaska also has a separate voter ID card. It has no photo and is issued at no cost. Qualified voters can get one along with their driver's license or state ID. State ID cards with photo are available to seniors free of charge.

when I recently voted for the first time in a local election, I was pleasantly surprised to be asked for both my voter registration card and a photo ID at the polling place.

Yes, issued by the State Elections Commission exclusively for electoral purposes, although it is accepted as a form of ID for other business.
