Had friends over from the Carribean... they’ve had relatives from US Virgin islands reporting Chikungunya outbreaks there.
There may be some critical population level where pandemics are more likely.
These diseases have long been out there but in past times the US government did not import them deliberately into the country so they never came up on American Radar unless you asked for advice on what inoculations you need to go to somewhere outside of the civilized portion of the globe.
No disease here?, let's run with the story about Africa. Nothing there?, oh, okay, go with the bombing, or bus crash, or mudslide... Blah, blah, blah.
I’m of a mind that all (or at least nearly all) of what we think of as “new” is nothing more than “new awareness.” IOW, the events have always been a part of human existence, but not so many people were aware of them. Every time awareness goes up a notch, there are those who see the event as “new,” but in reality, all they have is a new label, or a new awareness.
