Traffic cameras turned off. Police chief says no more tickets issued by Redflex system

SIERRA VISTA — Traffic tickets are no longer being issued from video captured by traffic safety cameras in Sierra Vista as of Nov. 5, following the passage of proposition 408 in last Tuesday’s election.

The contract between the City of Sierra Vista and Redflex includes a provision that the city can terminate the agreement with no penalty if citizens vote to ban the use of photo enforcement. A grassroots effort brought the question to the Nov. 4 ballot, which passed by a large majority.

“While the actual removal of the cameras is the vendor’s responsibility, we can — and do — respect the voice of the voters, so the city immediately ceased issuing citations based on Redflex video,” says City Manager Chuck Potucek. Redflex has been notified of the city’s actions.

The traffic safety cameras had been operational in Sierra Vista since November 2011, when the first camera was installed at Fry Boulevard and Seventh Street.

“Our officers will periodically monitor driver behavior at the five intersections previously covered by the Redflex contract, but certainly not to the extent that a 24 hour camera could do,” says Police Chief Tom Alinen.

“We sincerely hope that motorists continue to maintain safe driving habits now that the cameras are no longer assisting with enforcement.”

The fools of Ottawa, Ontario recently voted to re-elect mayor Jim Watson on a platform including more traffic cameras. Canadians are very comfortable surrendering their liberties, and their fortunes, when their goverment leaders, and the children, cousins, nieces and nephews of those leaders - all of whome seem to work for the government - tell them "public safety" is at stake. What's wrong with you people down south?

Best news I’ve heard in a long time! It’s bad enough that the People’s Republic of Tucson looks like one big prison armed camp, but I especially hated how my favorite small AZ towns had Big Brother instead of any welome sign.

I really don’t have problems with cameras, if they are set up properly, e.g. yellow lights last 4 seconds, and a very stringent certification and quality control process. But they are never set up that way. Why, well because it is never about safety, it is about the money.

I received a speeding ticket out in west TN this autumn by some camera. Of course I was not driving so they can pound sand. No pun intended. :^)

It was kind of dumb to have those cameras there. Everyone knew where they were and would just drive 45 when they came up to the camera zones. I think I may have seen them flash just once or twice in all the years they were there. Not even really sure about that.

I went through one on my way to band practice every week when I lived in Seattle. I could get it to flash me every time. But I always stopped in time. Never got a ticket.

It became a sort of cat and mouse game, kinda like I did with traffic cops when I used to fix cash machines.

There was a guy down in Phoenix who used to drive through them with a monkey mask on. LOL! I don’t know if they ever caught that guy. I think they did.

I remember that (I’ve followed this pretty closely for quite a few years). In his state, the ticket would not stand if the driver could not be identified. And his claim was that he let all sorts of people drive his car.

It wasn’t the same guy that sent in a picture of money was it?

I recall the PD sent that individual a picture of handcuffs.
