Italians abort and contracept in order to have the good life now, screw the next one. The last thing they want is folks crowding their socialism burden and taking materialism from them.
Do you really blame people for wanting to hold onto what's theirs rather than handing it all over to hordes of Third World "refugees" (as European governments are doing, and as we're increasingly doing)?
