Large men will be misunderstood by the small.

Lee was a pure gentleman who fought for the wrong side, for a reason different from the others on his side, with honor and dignity, respected by both sides.

For the most part I agree. But Lee did not fight for the wrong side he just fought for the side that lost. You can be right and still lose. Look how we have ended up.

I will agree with the dignity part, but not with honor.

Lee swore an oath of allegiance to the U.S. and broke that oath.

Lee said he would only fight for Virginia and broke that promise.

Lee said he would only fight on the territory of Virginia and broke that promise.

And his pride was too great to back off from Gettysburg once he realized what he was facing so he sent in Pickett to salve his pride.

Agreed. Today people have lost the concept of the "Noble Enemy"; It is the plebeian that rules today and the plebeian cannot stand a better man.

Actually, it might be said that he fought on the correct side, being a native of Virginia who believed in States Rights. How would his honor stand if he fought against the Citizens of the Commonwealth, accepting the personal honor of Command offered to him by the President?
