PLOVER (WAOW) - A manufacturer of frozen snacks and appetizers told the state Monday that it was laying off 432 workers at its two Plover plants as part of a bankruptcy filing and proposed sale to another company.
Golden County Foods said it had reached a preliminary agreement to sell the company to Monogram Appetizers, subject to the approval of the Bankruptcy Court. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 15 and notified the state Department of Workforce Development of possible massive layoffs in a four-page letter released Monday.
Golden County Foods describes itself as world's largest supplier of frozen filled potato skins.
"As a condition to the sale to Monogram, the company is required to terminate all employees' employment with the company immediately prior to the closing of the sale," said Tina Check, Golden County Foods vice president of human resources. "Because Monogram will be buying the company's business as a going concern, we expect it will continue operating the company's business after the sale and that employees will be immediately rehired by the buyer with no interruption in their employment."
Golden County Foods is running out of money to operate and minus the completion of the sale or a large infusion of capital by mid-July, the company will be "forced to cease operations, terminate all employment and liquidate its assets," Check said in a statement.
The hourly workers at the plant are represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 1473.
Under state law, companies employing 50 or more individuals may be required to give 60 days notice before a mass layoff or closing. Once the state is notified, its Dislocated Worker Program's Rapid Response Team reaches out and offers assistance to the affected workers and employer.
Sob! Say it isn't so!
Union thugs claim another victim.....
Yes, but it looks like the new owner will rehire them (or replacements in the same area), sans union.
