Here’s the thing about “campus rape culture”…everyone is missing the point.

“So what are your ideas about how to change the hookup culture?”

I’ve got plenty of ideas, but nobody seems to like them.

First, we need to repeal “no fault” divorce laws. If you want a divorce, unless you have cause (cheating, abuse, breach of contract, etc), then you walk away with nothing. No alimony, no “community property”, etc. Until that happens, marriage is a sham and people don’t respect a sham.

Second, we would have to limit child support only to women who were married to the father of the child. If they won’t bother marrying before having sex with a man, then they must accept the financial risks. If they want financial support, then they will get married first.

Third, get rid of welfare for unmarried mothers, since the second reform has no impact if women can just substitute child support from Uncle Sam. I’m no real fan of child services, but if an unmarried woman can’t support her children, it may be better to involve them, rather than just pay her to have more children out of wedlock.

“Rape culture is an attitude toward women in particular, but not even just to women—to treating all people as sexual objects, nothing more than an opportunity for sex,” Anna Bahr, a Columbia graduate told New York magazine. That’s not “rape culture,” that’s hook-up culture. That’s the post-sexual revolution American culture, and she’s right that it stinks.

Very insightful thoughts from Ms. Charen, and the whole article is well worth reading.

Women are told that participating in a sex-obsessed culture with no ethical principle other than "consent" will make them happy. When they aren't happy, most don't reexamine the original premise. Instead, they reason that, since their sexual experiences are making them miserable, they must have been "nonconsensual."

It's not a "rape-culture," as Ms. Charen observes. It's a free-fornication pansexual mélange.

I like all your ideas. No fault divorce and child support only for formerly married people.

Men have no reproductive rights. Women can choose abortion, adoption, leaving the baby at a fire station—men can choose none of these and in fact must pay child support or go to jail. (The opposite of reproductive rights.)

We also need to invent a male birth control pill pronto. Men just don’t like condoms; I can see why—and so they rely on these “hookups” women to be telling the truth about being on birth control or whatever and now we have >50% of all babies born in the US to unwed mothers. The fact that these men are risking 25%-40% of their income for the next 18+ years in child support for their one night stands doesn’t seem to faze them.

I also think that if babies were taken from their unwed mothers (and they were only allowed “visitation”) and given to their “fathers” (one night stand sperm donors) for custody and perhaps subsequent adoption placement there would be a lot fewer single mothers.

Women have all the rights and none of the responsibilities. It’s the civil rights issue of our time. (Other than police seemingly shooting everybody, whether black or white.) Very sad about this since I have 3 teenage boys and they will be entering this hookup culture soon, if they haven’t already.

Lots to think about. Men, go vote your interests better. But I’m preaching to the choir here.

Bingo! I hadn’t even considered they were mistaking dissatisfaction with non-consent. That would explain the total disconnect between the accusation and the events surrounding the accusation in many of these cases.

I think I’d about kick my sons behind if he was part of a frat that put up signs like that.
Yes, REAL MEN know better and treat women accordingly.

Exactly. Over time, the feeling built up that her sexual interactions with the guy had not brought her happiness. Therefore, there must have been a violation of consent.

Theodore Dalrymple has written about the ways the free-sex ideal fails to conform to the reality of human nature and the resulting social and personal damage.

I'm reminded of a time a year or more ago when two hit country songs were "Mama's Broken Heart" by Miranda Lambert and "Redneck Crazy" by Tyler Farr. The plot of both songs was that one partner in fornication decided to move on to a further partner, resulting in the rejected partner's feeling deep betrayal and violent jealousy. There's no logical basis for this: a fornication relationship has no guarantees. He (or she) can consent with you today, another person tomorrow, and a third on Friday.

However, both songs were extremely popular and reflective of many relationships among young adults, as far as I can tell. They may profess the creed of "... as long as it's consensual," but when someone consents to dump them, the drive they feel for a permanent, exclusive relationship goes much deeper than their indoctrination.
