Cover songs are not about improving upon the original but about an artist taking a great song and adapting it to their own unique style.

I'm a big fan of cover songs. Not the sound-alike cover songs that you find on K-tel records (remember those?) but those that bring something new to the original. Especially when the genre is changed (i.e. from rock to country) or when the gender of the lead singer is switched up. A good example is Melissa Quade's version of Pink Floyd's Time.

For those who are really into cover songs, I recommend the podcast Coverville by Brian Ibbott. He's got over 1,000 episodes online - nearly 10,000 hours of great covers! And he hardly ever repeats them.

Fer sure. I heard a cover of Carry on My Wayward Son recently and it annoyed me no end because it was a clone of the original.

As a Pink Floyd fan, I'm going to check that out.

Also one can't find covers much more original than the ones The Bad Plus does.

Here you go. The Bad Plus - Comfortably Numb

You have to let it sink in. Headphones & glass of wine kind of music. Don't rush it.
