In addition to an aura of personal strength, Putin’s regime is based on theft and thuggery, with crude Russian nationalism and expedient support for the Russian Orthodox Church. This formula though will not survive Putin. Low oil and commodity prices are eroding the Russian economy and state finances so rapidly that Putin may get forced out instead of being able to die in office or depart at a time of his choosing.
