You've hit on the most important thing of all - the country has undergone a moral collapse. Not at the subtlety level of determining the number of angels on the head of a pin, but rather at the level of basic survival morality, the belief in the rightness of our own existence rather than that of murdering criminals and psychopaths. In the Bible God says He will send a "great veil" as a test. There is no doubt in my mind that that is exactly what we are looking at. We are indeed fighting "powers and principalities" now.
