People complicate policies and issues; they eagerly surround themselves with the trees and lose sight of the forest.
1) Leftists believe that Man is basically good, but that only Society (the State) - not the individual - can make him so. Man’s value is thus extrinsic and collective, defined by Society, not intrinsic and individual, defined by the Creator.
2) Leftists believe that Redistribution - of everything, from wealth to rights to words - is the means that Society can use to effectively make Man good. Any natural disparity is therefore evil in the eyes of a leftist. All must become indistinguishably the same: one size must fit all.
Once you understand those two things - their forest - then everything they do makes a perverse kind of sense: pro-abortion, anti-capital punishment, Affirmative Action, special privileges for any so-called minorities, unilateral treaties to raise up mismanaged countries while bringing down prosperous ones, et cetera.
Equality of opportunity - liberty - is therefore inherently unjust and evil, while equality of outcome - tyranny (since only external, centralized control can possibly dictate such an artificial thing) - is inherently just and good.
Obviously, the insiders, like Stalin and Obama, only care about themselves, but the true believers and the useful idiots sincerely operate following this philosophy.
This makes double standards and hypocrisy not only necessary but admirable to the leftist. Any countering argument based upon objectivity, ethics, morality, and genuine unbiased equality is thus doomed to fail with such a one.
