A Lesson in Cognitive Dissonance
Scott Adams Blog ^ | 27 Oct, 2016 | Scott Adams

A few days ago I tweeted a message that induced cognitive dissonance in a lot of Twitter users and some of the bottom-feeding media (Salon, HuffPo). This is a good case study for understanding the phenomenon. Here’s the tweet:

(see at link)

Cognitive dissonance happens when you are confronted with a truth that conflicts with your self-image. To reconcile the conflict, your brain automatically triggers an hallucination to rationalize-away the discrepancy.

To be clear, that is the way normal brains work. Cognitive dissonance is happening to all of us on a regular basis. It’s just easier to spot when it happens to someone else.

I engineered the offending tweet to make the point that ISIS appears to prefer a Clinton presidency. That puts Clinton’s supporters on the same side as ISIS, at least in the narrow sense that they might prefer the same candidate. That creates a conflict between Clinton supporters’ self-image as good people and the uncomfortable reality that they might prefer the same candidate as ISIS. If my point is credible, the predicted result is that it would induce cognitive dissonance and a literal hallucination.

Funny, it does seem that ISIS is holding off on terrorist attacks to favor hillary in the election. They don’t want to stir up border control and immigration arguments that would favor Trump.

Too glad I’m still not recruiting young engineers.

First thing I’d do is to check if they are on Facebook (even though this would have required me to sacrifice my dignity by getting an account and thereby admitting that my IQ was down there with MSM trolls).

If: They are there in ANY capacity.
Then: Hireth not.

And you notice they are still attacking people with knives and sexually assaulting in the EU, but not the US, so the jihad is only cooled off in the United States.

Being on Facebook doesn't necessarily make you an idiot.

When my daughter was working on her doctorate, the peer group required her to be on FB. As she told me, they took a vote on her getting an account and the result was almost unanimous...with just one exception :)

Cognitive dissonance happens when you are confronted with a truth that conflicts with your self-image...actually has to do with two strongly held ideas which are in conflict with each other - my niece the idealistic obstetrician who refuses to do abortions but strongly supports Hillary Clinton for president will one of these days wake up with a bad case of cognitive dissonance....

Good criteria. When I hired young engineers I’d ask them what they liked to make. If the answer was a blank stare, “hireth not”. Nowadays if the “made” software apps, great, but if the only creative endeavors involved accumulating followers or likes, fergettaboutit!

Great example of cognitive dissonance on the DUmp yesterday. Someone had posted a poll that showed Trump in the lead only to be followed by one in ALL CAPS demanding that “if you have info about a poll that favors the right, don’t post it here”.

Poor snowflakes...need their safe space!

Yep, and deep down every liberal knows or suspects that their beliefs are based on some degree of falsity. For people who have so much of their ego tied into political ideology, it is terrifying to confront or admit. That is why so many immediately become hysterical when confronted with empirical evidence that contradicts their version of reality. This is especially true for the self-proclaimed “intelligent” liberal; many will outwardly deny the truth even when they are being marched off to the camps. A physical death is more acceptable than the death of their self concept.

Good observations.

I add that where they are happening, e.g. Dakota Access Pipeline, the media has ignored it.

I interview young and old engineers today. One thing I have noticed is that the leftists gobble down the lies of Jon Stewart who himself claims that his is fake news and he is a self-avowed socialist. But, the left totally believes him on news. I have dealt with several engineers who cannot seem to make a logical decision who are huge Jon Stewart fans. That may be one of my new evaluation criteria disqualifiers.

The entire liberal rat lifestyle is a constant exercise in cognitive dissonance. It’s why they are so crazy and dangerous. Cognitive dissonance also explains the college snowflake conundrum - they are literally running around with their hands over their eyes and ears to avoid the truth.

You’re right, come to think of it.

I was starting to forget about BLM and SJW. I’m sure my memory will be refreshed come Nov 9th.

That seems to be why the media spins the truth on news that is purely nonpolitical. An uninformed society is easily manipulated.

ISIS is calling for attacks, in fact it’s their default position. But someone must step up and make the commitment to follow through. The motive is there, it’s the means and opportunity that are the only limiting factors.
