Serenity was a great film, capped off the Firefly series (recommended if you have not yet watched). Mal Reynolds is the Han Solo of a different era and the Firefly/Serenity tale is a sci-fi western that Joss pulled off brilliantly. However, as I said, Joss’ politics are firmly rooted in sci-fi.
