The reason: If politicians like Trump, et-al do what is really needed to get us out of this financial death spiral, the voters will kick them out of office faster than you can say Bob’s yer uncle.

America never set out to be great.
It became great because of the Constitution, the freedoms and limits on government that it ensured.
America will not return to being great because that is a goal.
It will only return to being great by returning to the freedoms and limits on government given by and recognized by (”inalienable rights”) the Constitution.
Much - but not all - of what Trump is focused on fixing is doing just that. Sometimes without his knowing that it’s the Constitution he is bringing back.....for him many things are pragmatic corrections that he sees as vital as a very successful businessman........
