Seventy years ago today, President Harry S. Truman declared that the United States would provide political, military and economic aid to democratic nations under threat from external or internal totalitarian forces. This policy would come to be known as the Truman Doctrine. Accordingly, Truman announced that he would ask Congress for a substantial aid package for Greece and Turkey.
